Not just another anti-bullying campaign

Bullying

On Monday at school, Bars and Melodies came to give an anti-bullying campaign. They sang songs that they wrote together and spoke to the entire senior school about their stories of being bullied and how they overcame it. It was a really inspirational event that came as a massive shock to everyone in my school (these boys are celebrities for crying out loud).

Bars and Melodies are a British duo. The team contains Leondre and Charlie who are 14 and 16 respectively. The two boys rose to fame on Britain’s Got Talent when they first sang their hit single Hopeful that they wrote themselves. Having the opportunity to listen to the stories of real people who are my age really puts things into perspective when it comes to bullying.

Movie Review – Mockingjay Part 1

Mockingjay Part 1 Review

I literally have one word for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 and that is WOW! The movie was incredible; I would even go as far as to say it was better than the book. In my opinion, the first half of the Mockingjay novel was boring, and that is something I never say about a book. The first part of the book was centred around Katniss who, surprisingly (note the sarcasm), had post-traumatic stress disorder.

However, the movie was extremely fast paced and kept me on the edge of my seat. The storyline, whilst very close to the book, contained added scenes that made it impossible to stop watching, even as someone who knew what was going to happen. For me, my favourite scene from the movie was the rescue scene. This wasn’t in the book which is probably why I loved it so much.

As per usual with The Hunger Games movies, the acting was fantastic. Jennifer Lawrence, once again, was the only person who could be Katniss Everdeen. In this movie Elizabeth Banks (Effie Trinket) was a stand out. She played the political rebel with a dash of Capitol fabulousness perfectly. I was also very impressed with how Josh Hutcherson portrayed Peeta slowly spiralling into insanity.

Advice to your son

Photo on 22-11-2014 at 1.38 pm #3Photo on 22-11-2014 at 1.38 pm #2Photo on 22-11-2014 at 1.37 pmThis blog is dedicated to a mother/daughter experience. However, after writing a couple of ‘Advice to your daughter’ posts, I have been asked to involve the beautiful boys in giving out advice.

I have two boys, aged 11 years and almost 8 years. Both of my boys are extremely different in all aspects of life – from size, academics and personality. What I would do for one of my boys, I would never consider doing for the other. For example, the 11-year-old remembers everything (not only in his life but in everyone else’s) so I would never spoon feed him information as he would look at me like I was strange. My nearly 8-year-old has blocked ears (I think anyway) as he hears nothing EVER. I need to tell him at least 4-5 times to do something and even then he forgets. Parenting is not an easy job.

So the advice is general, some relates to me, some advice I have received from beautiful friends of boys and other advice is based on research. [Read more…]

Journey to Self…

SONY DSCIn the busy lifestyle many people lead, it is difficult to find anytime for yourself. I recently attended a seminar for women in business and was pleasantly surprised by what I learned.

I thought I was going to gain the secret code to running a successful business, and in many ways I suppose that is what I learnt. However, the secret code wasn’t a mathematical formula that I simply had to apply and instantly my business would triple in profits. The secret code was me. I had to indulge myself on spending quality time reflecting on my last, my present and my future, visualising what I saw.

PAST – I learnt that from a little girl, I have always tried to make other happy. I would change who I was to mirror the people around me. If those around were unhappy, I would blame myself, often punishing myself for not being the person they thought I should be.

PRESENT – My chosen career reflects the woman I have always been. I make beautiful books for families who have lost loved ones, cherishing those memories ( http://www.PreciousMemoriesByNatalie.com.au). I am still trying to make people happy at their saddest hour.

FUTURE – I can see my wonderful family laughing as we venture on another family holiday. I can see the success of my business, feeling a sense of achievement that I am making a difference in people’s lives. I AM HAPPY.

By indulging in myself, I have not only altered my path but those around me that I care deeply about. When have you taken time to improve yourself?

cheers natalie

The most self-indulgent thing that I think I do is read. I love reading and I always have and it it’s one of things I do just for me and not for anyone else. I also love to write and by write, I do mean write things other than blog posts. I love writing about anything that comes to mind but usually gory or depressing stories (mum says they are my speciality).

As well as reading and writing, I love to listen to music. I am one of those people who desperately fails at anything to do with music, except for listening to it. I love the way I can lose myself in the lyrics. I also love being able to distract myself from anything that’s going on in the world.

When it comes to my body, I love playing sports. Whether it’s playing in my team for netball and basketball, or a lesson of PE at school, I absolutely love it. I do quite a lot of exercise and love how energised it makes me feel. As much as I have to do PE and I am committed to my sporting teams, I play these sports because I enjoy them and want to do them for me.

Something I wish I would do for myself is running. I am not a very good runner but I wish I was. Every time I decide to start getting fitter and going for more runs, I find an excuse or some reason why I can’t do it that night. If I could do one more thing for myself it would be running because after I go for a run, I usually feel really good about myself.

Hot or not??

imagesRecently I took the family to the races to spend the day with friends. It was a beautiful sunny day, the track was gleaming, the horses were looking powerful and the punters ready to spend up big.

As we settled down in our little spot for the day, I began watching the crowd mingle with each other but more importantly, I was fashion watching. I love to not only see what people are wearing (I try to stay up with fashion) but the way in which the inner fashionista comes out.

Mum or Friend?

Photo on 13-02-14 at 5.57 PMFor those of you who love to read our blog, you will clearly see that Ashlea and I are great friends. We have lots in common and for most of the time we get on extremely well. This isn’t hard as Ash is a great kid (or young lady) and easy to communicate with. However, there are times when I need to put my parenting hat on and I am finding this more and more difficult with her.

The loves of my life – my four children. Each child brings me joy, love, pleasure, anger and have made me the woman I am. I love them all equally but there are times when I like one more than another. A Favourite child I do not have.

Do you have a favourite child and afraid to admit it?
