To our wonderful followers, 2015 is a big year for us where our BLOG has now moved to a SELF-HOSTED domain. This is so we can offer our followers more value – competitions, giveaways and great insight into raising TWEENS and TEENAGERS.

Unfortunately in the move, we have lost some of wonderful subscribers.

Please head to www.OurParallelConnection.com and follows us once more.

Thanks heaps for your support in the past and look forward to our relationship in the future.

Cheers

What a Day to be Alive!

Teenagers are usually very easy to please, we just want our phone, our space and our wifi. This time of year it’s even easier. As much as it might seem like a pain to buy for us, we usually don’t want anything except what is the latest trend. It’s simple, buy me what everyone wants or has and I’ll be happy.

However, today (Friday 12th December), it takes even less to make us happy. To put it simply, today is a day when we receive gifts from the people we love. Going out on a limb here I am going to say that nearly 80% of all teenagers have either read the Harry Potter series or listened to 5 Seconds of Summer. Some are like me and are in love with them both.

If you have even a mild interest in either, you’re in luck. If you completely obsess over one or both, then your world has just been complete. Today marks the day of the release of 5 Seconds of Summer’s latest album (yeah these albums are just dropping like flies, I love it!!!) and the first short story in the Harry Potter collection.

Livesos is the highly original (note the sarcasm) title of the album that has been released by 5 Seconds of Summer today. Incidentally, it is an album full of fan favourites played live by 5sos, hence the name. This is a perfect Christmas idea for all the teens who are in love with the Aussie band.

A few days ago, JK Rowling, world renowned author of the Harry Potter series, sent word that she would be releasing one short story a day from the 12th- 24th of December. These short stories would be centred around all the untold stories of the Harry Potter series. I know this doesn’t sound like such a big deal, but to every single Potterhead in the world, this is massive news.

I’ll write reviews for both the Livesos and Harry Potter short story once I have listened and read them both.

My Christmas loves

I started this wonderful Christmas journey 14 years ago. Every year I cherish the family photo as it shows exactly where my children were at. I can see how they have physically changed by also see the emotional development of each. I have never asked them to be someone they are not in these pictures as you can see by some of the expressions. I have been require to sit in a few because that was the only way I could get the pictures, but that was the stage they were at. I love this time of year. Do you?

How do I talk to my teenager?

Scream

Communicating with a teenager can be like banging your head against a brick wall. The parent/teen rivalry has not changed from when I was a teen, but accepting that being a teenager today is different from years ago and so too is the way we communicate. Communicating with your teenager doesn’t mean you have to go out and learn all the new slang (although sometimes that does help a little), it is understanding where they are coming from so the communication between parent and child stays alive.

When you think your teenager won’t listen to you, or you have tried everything to make your teen listen, and things are still not working, maybe it’s time to take advice from the teen’s themselves. Child psychologist Michael Carr-Gregg has often talked about teens wanting to be treated with respect, wanting to be treated like adults and often feel that they are not being listened to. This of course, must go both ways for a successful connection.

Advice to your son

Photo on 22-11-2014 at 1.38 pm #3Photo on 22-11-2014 at 1.38 pm #2Photo on 22-11-2014 at 1.37 pmThis blog is dedicated to a mother/daughter experience. However, after writing a couple of ‘Advice to your daughter’ posts, I have been asked to involve the beautiful boys in giving out advice.

I have two boys, aged 11 years and almost 8 years. Both of my boys are extremely different in all aspects of life – from size, academics and personality. What I would do for one of my boys, I would never consider doing for the other. For example, the 11-year-old remembers everything (not only in his life but in everyone else’s) so I would never spoon feed him information as he would look at me like I was strange. My nearly 8-year-old has blocked ears (I think anyway) as he hears nothing EVER. I need to tell him at least 4-5 times to do something and even then he forgets. Parenting is not an easy job.

So the advice is general, some relates to me, some advice I have received from beautiful friends of boys and other advice is based on research. [Read more…]

Journey to Self…

SONY DSCIn the busy lifestyle many people lead, it is difficult to find anytime for yourself. I recently attended a seminar for women in business and was pleasantly surprised by what I learned.

I thought I was going to gain the secret code to running a successful business, and in many ways I suppose that is what I learnt. However, the secret code wasn’t a mathematical formula that I simply had to apply and instantly my business would triple in profits. The secret code was me. I had to indulge myself on spending quality time reflecting on my last, my present and my future, visualising what I saw.

PAST – I learnt that from a little girl, I have always tried to make other happy. I would change who I was to mirror the people around me. If those around were unhappy, I would blame myself, often punishing myself for not being the person they thought I should be.

PRESENT – My chosen career reflects the woman I have always been. I make beautiful books for families who have lost loved ones, cherishing those memories ( http://www.PreciousMemoriesByNatalie.com.au). I am still trying to make people happy at their saddest hour.

FUTURE – I can see my wonderful family laughing as we venture on another family holiday. I can see the success of my business, feeling a sense of achievement that I am making a difference in people’s lives. I AM HAPPY.

By indulging in myself, I have not only altered my path but those around me that I care deeply about. When have you taken time to improve yourself?

cheers natalie

The most self-indulgent thing that I think I do is read. I love reading and I always have and it it’s one of things I do just for me and not for anyone else. I also love to write and by write, I do mean write things other than blog posts. I love writing about anything that comes to mind but usually gory or depressing stories (mum says they are my speciality).

As well as reading and writing, I love to listen to music. I am one of those people who desperately fails at anything to do with music, except for listening to it. I love the way I can lose myself in the lyrics. I also love being able to distract myself from anything that’s going on in the world.

When it comes to my body, I love playing sports. Whether it’s playing in my team for netball and basketball, or a lesson of PE at school, I absolutely love it. I do quite a lot of exercise and love how energised it makes me feel. As much as I have to do PE and I am committed to my sporting teams, I play these sports because I enjoy them and want to do them for me.

Something I wish I would do for myself is running. I am not a very good runner but I wish I was. Every time I decide to start getting fitter and going for more runs, I find an excuse or some reason why I can’t do it that night. If I could do one more thing for myself it would be running because after I go for a run, I usually feel really good about myself.
